I’ve been a member of the Norwich 20 Group for more years than I can remember and continue to go to their evening life-drawing workshops to hone my skills and find new ways of working.
The workshops, which are run by Linda and Mike Chapman from the 20 Group, are attended by a mixture of professional and amateur artists, some of whom are my ex-students.
We work in complete silence and there is a very professional atmosphere, although there is a jolly tea break half way through. At the end of the session we look at each other’s work and give feedback. It can be quite demanding but they are always enjoyable and a valuable way to keep in touch with other artists and develop my practice.
You don’t have to be a member of the Group to attend these – they are open to anyone with an interest in life-drawing, so if you would like to come along, contact Frances Martin, the Chair of the 20 Group.
I used to teach life drawing, but always worked on a larger scale, so it was originally quite a challenge to capture the detail of the human body in smaller A4 or A3 sketchbooks.
In recent workshops I was particularly struck by the mood of the models and decided to use watercolours to capture the atmosphere they created.
