I always adore drawing the human body although my earliest foray into this subject matter at the Norwich School of Art in the 1960s wasn’t the most auspicious!
Life drawing was compulsory for all art students and the Principal of the Art School at the time Noel Spencer held my drawing up as an example of what not to do! Apparently it was too small in relation to the sheet of paper. I was so cross that I was determined to prove him wrong and become the best that I could be.
Over the following 50 years I must have drawn literally thousands of bodies, and there is always something new to see and capture, depending on the who, the what and the where of the subject matter.
The works I am featuring in this month’s post are almost diametric opposites; female nudes drawn at the weekly Norwich 20 Group artists workshop I attend, and the physical effort of men in action, drawn from the television during the recent rugby 6 Nations.
My fondness for rugby undoubtedly stems from my Welsh roots; and I am very proud that my great-grandfather William Bowen was Captain of Swansea and played for Wales in the early 1890s.
